Ms. Barber is a native Washingtonian and product of DC Public Schools. She attended Amidon ES, Jefferson MS, and Ballou SHS. Ms. Barber received a full, 4-year academic scholarship to Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. She graduated with a B.S. in Biology and returned to DC where she worked for the Department of Education’s White House Initiative for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. During this time, she was surrounded by former educators and influenced to go into the education field. Ms. Barber then pursued and received her M.ED in Elementary Education from Howard University.
Ms. Barber applied to work for DCPS. She was hired by her former principal and began her teaching career at Amidon ES where she taught for 10 years. Ms. Barber was recruited to work at Wheatley Education Campus where she has been for the past 9 years. During her time at Wheatley, Ms. Barber has been a teacher mentor, grade-level lead teacher, TLI, School Climate Initiative Coordinator, ELA coach, and received a Highly Effective rating for 5 consecutive years.
During her free time, Ms. Barber’s first love is spending time with her two daughters, ages 5 and 8, along with her dog Tuxedo. Ms. Barber also enjoys skiing, swimming, traveling, gardening, reading history books, and playing her XBOX One video game system.
