Nikki Barber is the Grade 5 Math, Science, and Social Studies teacher. Ms. Barber is a native Washingtonian and a proud graduate of DC Public Schools! She attended Amidon Elementary School, Jefferson Middle School, and Ballou Senior High School. Ms. Barber received a full, 4-year academic scholarship to Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She returned to DC where she worked for the U.S. Department of Education’s White House Initiative for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. During this time, she was surrounded by former educators and influenced to go into the education field.
After earning her Master of Education degree in Elementary Education from Howard University, Ms. Barber applied to work for DCPS. She was hired by her former principal and began her teaching career at Amidon Elementary School where she taught for 10 years. Ms. Barber was recruited to work at Wheatley Education Campus where she has taught since 2008. During her time at Wheatley, Ms. Barber was a teacher mentor, grade-level lead teacher, TLI, School Climate Initiative Coordinator, ELA coach, and received a Highly Effective rating for five consecutive years.
In her free time, Ms. Barber loves spending time with her two daughters, ages 5 and 8, along with her dog Tuxedo. Ms. Barber also enjoys skiing, swimming, traveling, gardening, reading history books, and playing her XBOX One video game system.
